Archive of weather for May 2007

Thursday May 31, 11:00 a.m. Not much wind for the last day of May here in beautiful downtown San Felipe. It's very warm with high humidity. There aren't too many different ways to say it's hot and humid, but that's the weather forecast these days. The cool wind is starting to pick up, however, it's a welcome relief when the temperature starts to climb over 80 F. Many people are packing up to go to Ensenada for the Baja 500 race this weekend. The weather is late today because I have a touch of the flu. I hope I feel better so I can go watch the race! kh

Wednesday May 30, 9:57 a.m. Our weather gal, Shirley, is delayed with car problems, so I'll be writing the weather until Saturday. It's very humid this morning which is not that bad as we have many plants that get their water from the air and of course, it causes the face to swell and wrinkles to disappear. It's slightly windy and quite warm. It's a good day for a swim in the Sea of Cortez. kh

Tuesday May 29, 10:57 a.m. We have almost perfect weather today. It's warm with a cool breeze which makes clamming or walking on the beach ideal. The town has emptied from our weekend visitors and crews are out cleaning up the mess. Some friends of mine went camping this weekend out at Punta Estrella and report a delightful weekend where they slept on the beach. This weekend is the Baja 500 in Ensenada. kh

Monday May 28, 11:30 a.m. I apologize for the late posting of the weather. I thought our weather gal was back on the job. I hope everyone has a pleasant Memorial Day. We have very warm weather with blustering winds. "Blustering" may be a bit strong, but my trees are blowing every which way. Last night there were sirens and fireworks here in town until about 3:30 a.m. Looks like we've made it through another holiday weekend, although not without a few accidents. Our next big weekend is the 4th of July. If you've made plans for a barbeque or a picnic today, the weather will cooperate. kh

Sunday May 27, 10:27 a.m. We had a beautiful display of fireworks over the Malécon last night, which made the dogs go nuts as they were very loud. The weather has held up as expected with warm temperatures and not too much wind. The Sea of Cortez is calm and inviting for our weekend visitors, although some will exit today to avoid the rush tomorrow. The forecast is for temperatures in the 80's throughout next week, but we all know that can change. A friend called me today from Ensenada to ask if there was sun here as it's been cloudy and damp there for two weeks. Being on the Pacific side has it's disadvantages! kh

Saturday May 26, 10:37 a.m. With barely a cloud in the sky and only slight winds on this beautiful Saturday morning, the Percebu Poker Run will be getting off to a grand start. If you are still considering coming down for the weekend, expect warm days and pleasant evenings. The ATV riders are going nuts on the dunes up above the Net, generating a lot of dust in town. Should be a great sunset. Also on today's calendar is the grand opening of Joya del Mar. Enjoy the day. kh

Friday May 25, 10:30 a.m. Perfect weather for this Memorial Day Weekend. The skies are clear and the sun is shining, very brightly I might add, as our weekend visitors start to roll into town. With the temperature in the evening remaining high, camping and eating outdoors should be quite pleasant. It is only slightly windy at this time, but I suspect the wind speed will increase as well as the outdoor temperature. "A Coupla of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking" plays again tonight and tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. kh

Thursday May 24, 11:30 a.m. Sorry for the late report! Another lousy day in paradise with calm seas and warm winds. The Sea of Cortez looks like a sheet of glass with slight ripples (at least from the camcorder). We could sure use a good rain to pack down the dirt streets, but I'm afraid it's not in the cards. It should be great weather for camping this weekend. "A Coupla of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking" plays again tonight at 7:00 p.m. See you there! kh

Wednesday May 23, 2 p.m. Out on the beaches it is a wonderful afternoon with 75 degree temperatures, delightful northerly breezes at 3-6 knots and not a soul around. Town is getting warm with temperatures now closing in on 90 in sheltered locations. Apparently there is more sand drifting across the road on the Laguna Salada between San Felipe and Mexicali and I expect there will be more of the sand piles forming which can cause bad accidents if you hit them at speed. This has been a very unusual year for this phenomenon of sand bumps, probably because of the shift in the prevailing winds. If you are coming down for the weekend drive carefully. (ej).

9:04 a.m. It's very windy this morning and my poor man's wind guage (Palm Tree) is going nuts. The skies are clear and the sun is shining brightly and it looks like we have a very pleasant spring day ahead of us. The humidity was pretty high last night, but that also is coming down as the morning moves along. Part of the new four-lane highway has opened, just in time for the Memorial Day Weekend crowds. The beaches should be full as well as the town. kh

Tuesday May 22, 2:15 p.m. It's been very warm and muggy today, but not as warm as in our server room. El Jefe has been orchastrating the repair of the air conditioner, which runs 24-7. It shut down from over-use and is now repaired. So, if you live in San Felipe, you were unable to get our site. I believe the secondary server in Mexicali broadcasted the site out of San Felipe. Hopefully, El Jefe, Roberto and Luis will go for a swim! "A Coupla of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking" opens again tomorrow evening. It's a great play. kh

Monday May 21, 9:50 a.m. We couldn't have asked for better weekend weather and the amount of people out on the beaches is testimony to that. There were many people camped out along the Malecon over the weekend and you could see there were a lot of people swimming. The play "A Coupla of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking" was a hit! See my comments and photos on Kat's Korner. I believe the wind will pick up early in the afternoon, however, the sun is shining and the skies are clear. kh

Sunday May 20, 10 a.m. Another perfect morning and a time when the weather is still excellent for sleeping. Along the beaches we are blessed with the natural cooling provided by the sea and our bedrooms are typically around 75 F with 50% relative humidity. Of course this situation will change as the summer approaches and by mid-June it will be time to turn on the room airconditioner. Let's see what Kat has to say about the premiere of the "Chicks" play last night. (ej)

Saturday May 19, 9:51 a.m. Its almost a repeat of yesterday. The skies are clear; the sun's shining and we have a nice breeze to cool you off. Be sure and use sun screen when laying around sun bathing, especially when it's hazy out. It's easy to burn if you're fishing or swimming or any other water activity. Tonight at 7:00 p.m. is the play, "A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking". It's starts at 7:00 p.m. and you may buy tickets (reasonbly) at the door if you didn't have time to get them at People's Gallery. kh

Friday May 18, 10:16 a.m. The end of the week brings us high humidity and warm breezes. The skies are hazy with stripes of white cloud here and there. For the most part, we'll have perfect weather this weekend. A great time to plan a camping trip on our white San Felipe beaches. The highway is still under construction, so drive with care. kh

Thursday May 17, 9:55 a.m. We have only slight winds and high humidity. The wind will likely pick up as the day progresses. It's a little hazy but not cloudy. It seems to have cooled down a bit this week, however, the sun is shining and the sea is warm enough to swim in. Remember, Saturday evening the play "A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking" opens in the old Rotary building here in San Felipe. Pick up your tickets at People's Gallery, next to the Net. kh

Wednesday May 16, 10:20 a.m. Some friends came down from Mexicali last night and said it was 109 F there yesterday and they were commenting how nice it was down here. That's hot! The wind has just started to pick up a bit. We should see about 90 F today. kh

Tuesday May 15, 11:00 a.m. I apologize for the delay in getting the weather report posted today. I have a touch of the flu and on top of that, I didn't have access to my laptop this morning. At any rate, we do have cooler temperatures today and high humidity. The wind is coming from the south this morning at about 8 miles per hour and it feels like rain. There is no forecast for rain today. Enjoy a ride out in the desert. kh

Monday May 14, 10:08 a.m. Monday morning brings us clear skies, a warm sun and slight winds coming from the east, southeast. The temperatures are forecasted to be cooler this week, however, I don't believe it. I think we are on our way to summer weather, completely skipping our spring. I was at the beach yesterday and the weather was perfect. Remember, "A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking" opens this weekend. Get your tickets at People's Gallery or Sunrunner Mail Service. kh

Sunday May 13, 10:02 a.m. Happy Mother's Day. We couldn't ask for better weather to celebrate American Mother's Day. Temperatures are cooler today and we have the slightest of mare tail (as in a horse's tail) clouds sweeping over our fair city, but nothing to write home about. It was still quite warm at 11:00 p.m. last night, but cooled off as the evening progressed. It may not hit 90 F today, but it will be warm and sunny to accommodate any outdoor activities planned for Mother's Day. kh

Saturday May 12, 10:00 a.m. Another warm day in beautiful downtown San Felipe. We have a slightly windy morning, clear skies and a warm sun. What else could you ask for? The forecast is for cooler weather than yesterday, but very warm just the same. The beaches are filling up more and more these days and the Sea of Cortez is becoming warmer and warmer. It will soon be time to turn off the electric water heater. I normally turn it off for at least two months each summer as the hot sun warms the water in the pipes. Tomorrow is the birthday party for Jim McKellar out on the beach at Pop's Camp. Great weather for an outside party and barbeque. kh

Friday May 11, 10:00 a.m. The beginning of the weekend finds us with very warm weather and a slight breeze. As reported yesterday, the wind speed will more than likely increase as the day goes on. I can see my Palm Tree moving in all directions and thirty minutes ago, it was still. Great weather for the fishing tournament planned for this weekend out of the El Cortez Hotel. kh

Thursday May 10, 9:50 a.m. There is no wind this morning which makes it feel much warmer than it is. We may have a change in the wind speed and as a matter of fact, in the last ten minutes, the wind has started to pick up slightly. When we have a cool breeze and a shade tree, it works like an outdoor air conditioner. The Sea of Cortez is calm and the skies are blue. A perfect day to celebrate Mother's Day in Mexico! kh

Wednesday May 9, 10:20. I can't believe it's 84 F at 10:00 in the morning. Summer will be here before we know it. It was cooler last night, but warmed up quickly this morning. There's not a cloud in the sky and not much wind, so we can expect a hot day in the city. Even though the price of gas in the United States has risen, it's still cheaper here, so plan a trip to San Felipe and enjoy our summer weather. kh

Tuesday May 8, 9:00 a.m. It got very warm yesterday and without the cool breeze, it would have felt like summer, which incidentally, is creeping up on us. The low last night was about 68 F. Because I don't have any windows that open in my house, I had my air on and off throughout the day. I certainly hope the government electrical subsidy kicks in soon. Although the winds were calm yesterday morning, we did have periods throughout the day where the wind reached 13 mph. We expect the temperature to reach the 90's today. Remember, it's cooler at the beaches than in town. It's a good day for a swim in the Sea of Cortez. kh

Monday May 7, 9:06 a.m. Clear skies and a warm wind greet us this beautiful Monday morning. Our weather gal, Shirley, is off again for a three week trip to Washington State. I'll be reporting the weather from the hood in downtown San Felipe. The forecast is for a high today of about 85 F with a real feel of nearly 95 F. Although the wind is almost calm at this time, I suspect the wind speed will change as the day progresses. Don't forget to get your tickets to "A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking", the newest play to hit San Felipe. Enjoy the day. kh

Sunday May 6, 7:00 a.m. Hooray, the skies have cleared. Although we still have winds from the northwest, sometimes gusty, it seems to be warmer. Must be that bright sunshine in such clear skies, promising us that this may be the week. The nights will remain cool enough for blankets for at least a few more days. Yesterday the afternoon was warm, cooling down again in the evening. Events such as the Chili Cook-off yesterday went well as planned, out on the beachfront. I know there are many more BBQ's planned around town this week-end, if the winds don't interfere. Myself, I'm heading north where it is cooler still, where I'll have to wear long-johns and jackets till I return to sunny San Felipe. But I'll be reading your weather report, every line, as it is expected to warm up by next week-end.. st

Saturday May 5, 7:00 a.m. Not unexpectedly the clouds are a solid overcast this morning. It is c-o-l-d and slightly damp, a miserable start for a fully planned May Day week-end. However, that strong sun can still break through as the morning progresses. With calm waters and soft breezes the stage is set for water games on the beach, and BBQ's under cover of a roof. We shall enjoy. Incidently, yesterday morning a friend reported 32 degrees in Seattle, Wn. I guess we won't complain here after all. st

Friday, 4 May, 4:00 p.m. We notice a light fog or haze is moving over the city and it seems to be cooling down. 7:00 a.m. Lower temperatures remain with us. Great for those snowbirds who are still waiting to go north for the summer. This is also wonderful for the events of this week-end, Chili Cook-off amongst others. Check our Calendar of Events. Watch out for next week when it is supposed to warm up fast, and maybe this one will be the one that stays with us. st

Thursday, 3 May, 7:00 a.m. Still we have lower than average temperatures promised for the rest of the week. Cool gusty winds from the west and south will stay with us through today. Great weather for the evening BBQ crowds. Many people have taken up the habit of Happy Hour after 4:00. Since many of us are seniors, the afternoon nap, the cool shower followed by the relaxed visit with the neighbors is quickly becoming the fashion here. But watch out for the early days of next week. It is supposed to take a significant turn to warmer weather Monday and on throughout the week. Maybe this is the start of our 'summer'. st

Wednesday, 2 May, 7:00 a.m. At 6:00 last evening we were experiencing only 1/2 mile visibility out here at the campo, about 5 miles north of town. It was like a fog rolling in over the town. There was little breeze and the water was quiet. That has all gone now. We have clear skies, calm waters and low humidity,...but we have gusty warm winds which threaten to become stronger later in the day. A low pressure system is developing over SE California and N Baja with windy, sand blowing conditions; bad news for crossing the Laguna Salada between here and the border. Monday we found the East side of that portion of highway was piled up to 2 1/2 feet causing traffic to really slow down to 10 mph for oncoming traffic or swearve to the left over the center line when no cars were approaching. On our return trip yesterday they had the truck crews out trying to clean off the larger piles, but we think it is a temperary fix because more is promised. st

Tuesday, 1 May. 2:30 p.m. We have scattered clouds with winds to the West at about 12 mph. It's 85 F and we are experiencing relative humidity at 45%. It's a great day for sunbathing or, if you're so inclined, a nice nap under a shaded tree. 7:55 a.m. The sun is shining brightly and there isn't a cloud in the sky. There's no wind either. However, that could all change in the next hour or so. One thing about San Felipe's weather, the wind can appear in a matter of minutes without any warning. Our weather gal, Shirley, had to take a trip to the U.S., but she will return this evening. We've had very warm evenings, so much so that we've been sleeping with the door open and sometimes, the air on. The forecast is for a high of about 82 and westerly winds up to 13 mph. Today is Primero de Mayo, the Mexican national holiday that is equivalent to the U.S. Labor Day. kh
