Here we see some general pictures of the landscape around San Matias. The town is located in the mountains of the San Pedro Matir range which is part of the backbone of Baja California. This region west towards the Pacific and the city of Ensenada has a wonderful climate with relatively low humidity and temperatures in the range 75 - 90 F during the summers and in the 60 - 75 F range in winter. To the east of San Matias, the road descends into the low desert plain that borders the Sea of Cortez. Temperatures there soar above 115 F during the summer months and the effect is immediately felt within a few miles as you drive through the mountain pass (see the inset map on the first page of this section). Many older people who used to live in San Felipe are now moving into this area because of the much more temperate climate and the more affordable housing.
