Here is a story of the road south of Puertecitos and how Rob Staffig was rescued by Good Samaritans:
2 February 2007
Hi,
My name is Rob Staffig, on January 23rd, 2007 I arrived in
San Felipe on my Honda V65 Motorcycle, I had enough of the
cold in Wyoming, U.S.A. and it was time for a trip out of
there! I had plans to drive further south along HWY 5 and
hook up with HWY 1. I drove down HWY 5 until the pavement
ended and then made the very big mistake of attempting to
continue on the gravel/rock road that eventually would have
led me to HWY 1... I say eventually because my motorcycle
ended up bottoming out on a sharp rock 22 miles beyond the
pavement busting a golf ball size hole in my oil pan. I
ended up sleeping that night out in the desert in my
sleeping bag. To say the least it scared the B-Jeezes out
of me, I don't scare easily... The next day I coasted my
motorcycle down the last of the Five Sisters. I was given
some oil from an old man that lived in a village off the
road, I stuffed a rag in the hole and drove/coasted further
down until I ended up at Cowpatty 2 a little grass roofed
building. I sat there, oil mostly gone, seeing no cars
since I left the pavement, my hopes were dwindling as to my
future... I had 5 bottles of water and no food. About an
half an hour after I had arrived there a pickup came by, I
flagged them down. Mike Gaal and his friend Tim from
California rescued me, they helped put my motorcycle in the
back of their Chevy Pickup and took me back to San Felipe,
welcomed me into thier flat on the beach in San Felipe and
then even drove me back to Brawley, California where I had
left my pickup. I would like to extend my Heartfelt Thanks
to these two part-time residents of San Felipe. I wrote
down their California addresses but when I got home here in
Wyoming I could not find the paper I wrote down their names
and address on. If there is any way you can help me by
printing this story I'd appreciate it! I'd really like to
send a thank you note for all of Mike and Tim's
hospitality. And Mike best to your wife Tina, hope to meet
her someday. Again, my name is Rob Staffig, address is:
P.O. Box 2415, Mills, WY 82644 / I can be contacted via my website:

Email Me! Wishing I was there in San Felipe... someday
again I'm sure, Loved It There! PARADISE!
Best Regards,
Rob Staffig
