Initial assembly meeting report of 14 January 2005

Well, Samuel Ramos Presidente Municipal in Mexicali, has sent his troops to get a feel of "how the iguana chews” (como masca la iguana) in the delegations of his incumbency. This past Friday 14th a very important assembly took place inside the new Community Center, to the south-east near the arches at the entrance to San Felipe and it had to do with the Plan for Municipal Development for this entire region.

Delegado Raymundo Jimenez’s invites still pack power. There was a very significant number of people attending the meeting where the head of the Municipal Planning Committee in Mexicali, Lic. Lorenzo Lopez Lima, and his annotators gathered input regarding the needs of the community of San Felipe.

There were several tables, each one containing different items of interest, such as aspects of urban development, problems with trash, crime, sewage pollution and also tourism, the fishing trade, etc. and all were stacked with folks needing to be heard.

This is the time to insist for more autonomy for San Felipe. And definitely to push for municipalization, and to establish an effective communication line with the new powers to be, to get answers, attention, action and continuation of the solutions the community requires and deserves.

Something immediate needs to happen and it has started with the agreement to initiate a Neighborhood Committee in the urban San Felipe area. Other similar groupings need to be organized and be in force to make all of our voices heard. We need to eradicate violence, ignorance, indifference before all of that takes hold and gets worse here.

We would like San Felipe to become the best little port city this side of the Sea of Cortez, and for that we need to start protecting the landscape and the environment. Rid the countryside and town of eye sores (billboards for everything everywhere), and convince the towns authorities and educate the populace to produce less trash, recycle it wisely and to conserve water and stop dumping sewage into the ocean and into the underground water tables, among other things that need our immediate attention.

Greed is rearing its ugly face and the cost of property and services is heading sky high. The economy has started to respond to the construction demands of the many immigrants from the cold up north, building their dream homes here and in all of Baja. Prices for everything are rising and San Felipe still has no year round means of economic activity and some families are hurting, specially those of fishermen who have to endure bad fishing seasons.

The change of government in Baja California from one political party to its opponent appears to be a healthy occurrence. And at the risk of sounding repetitive, we must insist at this point, that we need to have an active correspondent in the municipal government in Mexicali now, in order to have a direct link and to be able to exert a little pressure, make an impression and make them look useful and needed in the process of getting their undivided attention for San Felipe.

Bien, Samuel Ramos, Presidente Municipal por Mexicali, manda sus tropas a sentir como masca la iguana en las delegaciones de su incumbencia. Este pasado Viernes 14 una muy importante asamblea se llevó a cabo dentro de las instalaciones del Centro de Desarrollo Municipal, al sureste cerca de los arcos a la entrada de San Felipe y tuvo que ver con el Plan Municipal de Desarrollo para esta región entera.

La invitación del delegado municipal Raymundo Jimenez aun lleva poder. Una muy significativa cantidad de gente atendió los procedimientos donde el director del COPLADEMM en Mexicali Lic. Lorenzo Lopez Lima y sus anotantes recababan información con respecto a las necesidades de la comunidad de San Felipe.

Todas las mesas  con los diferentes temas de interes, aspectos del desarrollo urbano, problemas de basura, crimen, contaminación por aguas negras, y tambien el turismo, los asuntos de pesca, etc. Estaban llenas con gente que deseaba ser oida.

Este es el tiempo de insistir y lograr más autonomía para San Felipe. Y quizás hasta para buscar la municipalización. Y establecer una linea efectiva de comunicación con los nuevos poderes en el gobierno, para obtener respuestas, atención, acción y una continuacion de las soluciones que la comunidad requiere y merece.

Algo inmediato necesita suceder y ya ha comenzado con un acuerdo para iniciar un Comité de Vecinos en el area urbana de San Felipe. Otras agrupaciones similares necesitan organizarse y estar en fuerza para hacer que nuestras voces puedan ser oidas. Necesitamos erradicar la violencia, la ignorancia, la indiferencia antes que todo eso se establezca aquí entre nosotros. Me gustaría que San Felipe fuera la mejor pequeña ciudad porteña de este lado del Mar de Cortéz y para ello necesitamos empezar por proteger el paisaje y el medio ambiente. Liberar al campo y la ciudad de heridas visuales (como los anuncios espectaculares por cualquier cosa y en cualquier parte), y convencer a las autoridades del pueblo y educar a la población a producir menos basura, reciclarla inteligentemente y conservar el agua y evitar que el drenaje de aguas negras se vierta al mar y a las tablas freáticas de agua potable, entre otras cosas que necesitan de nuestra inmediata atención.

La codicia asoma su feo rostro y el costo de la propiedad y los servicios está subiendo a los cielos. La economía ha comenzado a responder a las demandas de los inmigrantes del frio al norte, quienes construyen sus casas de sueños  en toda la Baja California, los precios de todo están subiendo pues y San Felipe aun no cuenta con medios para activar su economía de todo el año y las familias sufren, especialmente las de los pescadores que deben soportar malas temporadas de pesca.

La alternancia en el gobierno en Baja California de un partido político al otro aparenta ser una saludable ocurrencia. Y corriendo el riesgo aparecer repetitivos, debo insistir que éste es el momento de tener un corresponsal activo en el nuevo gobierno municipal en Mexicali ahora, para contar con un vínculo directo y tener la capacidad de ejercer un poco de presión, causar una impresión y hacerlos parecer útiles y necesarios en el proceso de obtener su individida atención por San Felipe.

Favor de consultar seguido éste sitio donde tendremos más detalles y como involucrarse con el Comité de Vecinos y como organizar su propio comité. Este es el tiempo de actuar.
