TONY REYES FISHING TOURS
B/M JOSE ANDRES
SAN FELIPE, BAJA MEXICO
Sunday April 18 to Friday April 23, 2004
Sorry there were no pictures this trip:
When my friends came back from their week on the Jose Andres last year and related their adventures, I knew I needed to find a way to come on this year's trip. I have not been disappointed. I was anxious to see a variety of birds. Each day proved fruitful. I saw herons, nesting pelicans with chicks and frigates, just to name a few. I was able to kayak around several islands, stopping at many beaches to collect treasures and hike. A highlight many days was seeing osprey on their huge nests protecting eggs and chicks. Although the water was rather chilly, I enjoyed snorkeling. We say many species of fish and beautiful coral. Many folks in our group went fishing every day and I tagged along a few times. People caught spotted bass and numerous other fish as reported. Our guides from the boat were always willing to take us anywhere we wanted to go. They were patient and knowledgeable. Our crew was especially helpful. An the meals (cooked to order many times) were superb! The chef and his assistant were so accommodating and worked tirelessly. Our days were full and rewarding and I hope to come back for more adventures soon. The Sea of Cortez adventure was an incredible "I" opening experience. As a neophyte adventurer I had no problem racking up loads of personal "firsts"" on this trip - my first time fishing on this sea, my first time kayaking, my first time snorkeling, and of course, my first exposure to this incredible part of the world of birds, astonishing rock formations, thrilling vistas on land and sea and a host of shells, rocks and skeletons to collect. I experienced the excitement of reeling in a 15-pound yellow tail, plus snapper, bass, mackerel and the eel that "got away". I loved the desert island fantasy of exploring an island on my own and coming upon nesting pelicans and predatory gulls. The other participants on the trip were a varied group of diverse ages and background - a good mix of first-timers like me and others who return year after year. The generosity of the "pros" in sharing tips and gear and years of fishing experience was heart-warming and a major element in making the whole experience so fulfilling. Vicki and Peter Bergstrom are more like hosts than trip headers and the crew of the Jose Andres were friendly and accommodating and as savvy as the perfect weather. From my first early morning kayak into the sunrise to the satisfaction of dining on our own catch at night. I have enough happy memories and memorable experiences from this trip to last a lifetime.
