Tony Reyes' Fishing Report June 1 - June 6, 2003
On Sunday, June 1st we left San Felipe harbor in some great weather.
On Monday, we arrived at the San Bernabe Reef. The fishing was a
little slow. We caught some Yellowtail and 3 Black Seabass. After lunch
we moved to the Salsipuedes Island. Again the fishing was a little slow.
During the night we moved to the San Francisquito Bay. The water was
loaded with giant squid. We caught approximately 70 that ranged in
weight from 10-25 pounds.
On Tuesday we moved on to fish the El Barril Reef. Fishing was hard
without bait, but one boat came back in with 6 big Yellowtail. They were
throwing 6x JR blue and white jigs with fast reels. We then moved on to
San Lorenzo Island where the weather continued to be great. Some
Yellowtail and Cabrillas were caught here, but with a lot of small bait
in the water, the fish weren't too interested in our lures.
On Wednesday we woke up to a beautiful sunrise at Diablo Point. All
the anglers worked hard at their fishing, but again it was quite slow.
We then moved on to the north point of Isla Angel de la Guarda. Working
around this reef produced a good catch of Cabrillas. The major highlight
of the day was Jason's catch of a 65 pound Grouper. We caught the limit
of Leopard Cabrillas. We moved on to Refugio where we stayed for the
night.
Thursday was another beautiful sunrise at Refugio Island. And
another slow morning of fishing. We moved on to the mainland. It was
windy making the fishing a little difficult. Some White Sea Bass were
caught along with some miscellaneous smaller fish.
On Friday we ended up fishing at Enchanted Island, bypassing the
Golden Reef due to high winds. Another day of slow fishing. We caught
some Spotted Bass, Cabrillas and a few Pargos. Over all it was a great
trip with good food, great crew and good people. There was only one
casualty on the last day. During the trip home with rough seas we lost
one toilet and sent it to a deep watery grave. May the fish enjoy!
