Pharmacies, Drug Stores and Botanicas
There are many pharmacies in and around San Felipe which carry all the usual medications, though often under a Mexican drug name. Because of the large population of retired people in this region there tends to be a specialization in products for the elderly; blood pressure, back pain, skin balms, viagra...and so on. One of the most knowledgable pharmacists in town is Tavo at the Botica Sagrado Corazon, next to Bancomer on Mar de Cortez. He will do virtually all of what a U.S doctor will do in diagnosing a problem and making a recommendation for treatment. Most drugs are available wihout a prescription and this is a good place to pick up a bottle of antibiotics or ibuprofen. Forget about obtaining narcotics here, Mexican law is very tough when it comes to such pain killers. Most pharmacies do not even carry such drugs, you would have to go to the hospital for them. You will also find many local Botanicas - stores that specialize in herbal remedies. The frequently have excellent teas and various roots and potions that can bring relief for minor aches and pains. Catavit is one that comes to mind - a very concentrated vitamin mix that some people swear invigorates them. Try looking on the back streets, for example a block inland from the North end of the Malecon, or on Mar Caribe near the Animal Rescue mission and Thrift Store.
