Peeka's First Year
by Irene Smith

Marti Williams of Reno Nevada was enjoying the beaches of San Felipe April of last year (2000) when a sick, starving puppy struggled to her trailer.

She brought the puppy home (now named Peeka) and got the mange and open sore healed quickly. The puppy was then well enough to have all shots and was spayed at 10 weeks.

In July Peeka was indicating that she was having some pain. X-rays taken in September showed bilateral hip dyslpasia. Surgery to correct that included six plates in the hips and screws at the top of each leg. The day of the second post operation check up was disastrous. Peeka suffered a heart attach on the examination table! CPR was given for 10 minutes, then her chest was opened for heart massage and use of the defibrillator brought her heartbeat back. Peeka is now a beautiful, full of vitality dog. Marti said the people at the Reno Vet Clinic are great surgeons and the bill is $9,000 for Peeka's first year.
